During the past quarter century the Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas (Radford, Ahles, and Bell 1968) has become the standard reference for plant identification throughout the Southeast. It has served very well as a lab manual and teaching aid for introductory plant taxonomy and field botany courses from Virginia to Florida and westward into Louisiana and Arkansas and consequently has become the most widely used flora in the region.

Six hundred-seven annotations and notes to aid plant identification are provided for the Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas by Radford, Ahles, and Bell. These include 265 concerning inconsistencies between keys and descriptions, 215 that correct spelling and other simple printing errors, 94 glossary additions and clarifications of terms, and 33 that deal either with nomenclature or authorship for accepted names. Annotations and identification notes for Manual of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas are treated as one continuous listing. All entries are according to page number. Spelling and wording errors and inconsistencies between keys and descriptions. Corrections were provided for most spelling errors, but some minor inconsistencies were merely noted, whether erroneous or not, without any change being suggested. Problems with glossary terms were targeted for clarification: a total of 94 major changes and definitions were added for terms used in keys and descriptions but either omitted from the Manual glossary or incorrectly treated in it.
