About BRIT Press

BRIT Press is the publications arm of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (BRIT®). Since 1967, the Press has distributed books and journals across the globe in support of BRIT's commitment to scientific research by botanists, including BRIT’s own scholars.

Titles range from widely accessible by non-botanist plant enthusiasts to scholarly research, including the Journal of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas (JBRIT). All proceeds benefit the mission of BRIT: to conserve our natural heritage by deepening our knowledge of the plant world and achieving public understanding of the value plants bring to life.

About BRIT

What is BRIT?

BRIT is a part of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden, and is a renowned scientific research and conservation center focusing on plant biodiversity, ecology, evolution, and conservation, from local to global scales. BRIT’s resources include a state-of-the-art molecular and structural laboratory, conservation seed bank, an herbarium with over 1.5 million specimens, a botanical press, and a botanical library of over 120,000 volumes.

BRIT's Mission

BRIT’s aim is to conserve natural heritage by deepening knowledge of the plant world and achieving public understanding of the value plants bring to life. BRIT operates in support of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden's mission:

To explore the critically important world of plants, collaborate to discover the role they play in our cultural and natural environments, and engage people to conserve nature and improve the human experience.

BRIT's Work

Founded in 1987 and based in Fort Worth, BRIT documents the diversity of plant life and conducts extensive research around the world. In the last 10 years, BRIT scientists have located and described scores of species previously unknown to science. BRIT scientists share many desires and traits with the botanist-explorers of the 18th centruy like Sir Joseph Banks, Captain James Cook, and Charles Darwin: they're adventurous, curious, passionate, independent, and smart. They are intrinsically teachers, driven to find new plant species and research plant life for agricultural, economic, environmental, medical, and social uses and to share that knowledge in the classroom and the research laboratory.

Current major projects are ongoing in Texas, SE USA, Mexico, Europe, and the Pacific Islands.

BRIT's Impact

BRIT supports botanical solutions to address globally challenging problems ranging from pollution clean-up to sustainable food sources. By serving as a think tank and catalyst, BRIT inspires learning and forms interdisciplinary collaborations for critical research within scientific, educational, social, cultural, and business communities.

BRIT's work impacts our community and the world in many functional areas including environment, by giving people a local sense of stewardship; medicinal plant efficacy, by contributing with colleagues to an appreciation of the nutritional and medicinal use of plants; society, by training a new generation of thinkers and problem solvers; and in agriculture, by working with our collaborating institutions to create a better understanding of sustainable agricultural practices and preserving plant diversity.
