Colorado hosts an extraordinary range of ecosystems and vegetation communities, spanning elevations from 3,500 to over 14,000 feet and supporting nearly 3,200 vascular plant species. This volume provides a comprehensive dichotomous key to the vascular plants of Colorado, complete with detailed descriptions, distribution maps, habitat information, flowering periods, and elevation ranges for all species. Color photographs are included for approximately 40% of taxa.

Flora of Colorado is designed to enable students, researchers, amateur and professional botanists, and anyone interested in the state’s flora to confidently and accurately identify plants they encounter throughout Colorado’s diverse landscapes.

About the Author(s)

Jennifer Ackerfield has studied the flora of Colorado for nearly three decades, documenting its remarkable diversity across a wide range of habitats. She currently serves as Head Curator of Natural History Collections and Associate Director of Biodiversity at Denver Botanic Gardens. Previously, she was Assistant Curator of the Charles Maurer Herbarium at Colorado State University (CS), where she also taught Plant Identification for twenty years.

Her research focuses on plant systematics and evolution, including extensive work on Hedera (English ivy) and Cirsium (thistles). She earned her M.S. in Botany from Colorado State University in 2001 and her Ph.D. in 2020. Jennifer has collaborated with numerous organizations, including the Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Natural Heritage Program, Colorado Native Plant Society, Crested Butte Wildflower Festival, Mesa Verde National Park, Rocky Mountain National Park, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Outside of her professional work, Jennifer enjoys hiking, photography, botanical illustration, gardening, and spending time with friends and family.
